We were asked by Briggs Marine to design and build a specialist intervention launch to be used by the UK Environment Agency with very tight draught, height and length restrictions, capable of travelling at high speed and going offshore night and day with up to 4 crew members.
Arthur Mursell of TT Boat Designs completed the design work for us. Mecal, on behalf of MCA, advised how to make the open boat design acceptable for working at sea day and night. The skipper of the boat being replaced advised on equipment and layout.
Goodchild Marine oversaw the design and build of the aluminium hull, decks, and console at Alicat Workboats Ltd in Great Yarmouth.
Following delivery of the hull and decks to our yard, we completed the boat in compliance with the MCA code category 3. The new design performed well and reached nearly 32 knots fully loaded with 4 people aboard during trials.
She has since been named Orion.
